Balloon Racers

My group for building a balloon racer was Bertha ( Elizabeth Oakes) and Lauren. We created our first car which wasn't all that great... at all. It's name was Stella Dot and she was beautiful but not very fast. She was made out of styrofoam and a Stella Dot box. The wheels were essentially wooden balls and the same size in the front and the back. We soon discovered that this did not work. So we built a new car (mostly Lauren but we helped). This car we named Stella Dot II and she was much faster ( although not as pretty so we had to tell her how fast and smart she was so she wouldn't feel bad about herself). This is in part because her wheels were shorter in the front than in the back. She was also made out of styrofoam. We won third place in the tournament but that is alright because it isn't whether you win or lose it is how you play the game. :) :)

Magnet Racers

My group for making magnet racers was Ashley, Caroline, Will, and me. The first car that we worked on was Tiffany ( may she Rest in Peace). She was a medium-sized car made of Legos. she had a long front with smaller wheels in the front and bigger in the back. She had two magnets on the back. Though not the fastest car she will always be our favorite because we completely covered her in feathers and glitter glue. Obviousely she was absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately she was extremely slow. She was rather heavy and turned dramatically to the side. The feathers were also not very aerodynamic. All of this slowed her down a lot. So we began our second car. His name is Jaime Phillip Alessandro Phillips Tisdale Graham. A glorious and regal name for a very plain looking car. He definitely earned his name though, because using him our group won the race for our class. Jaime and Tiffany are very different. Jaime is much smaller than Tiffany with an even longer front. All his wheels are of equal size and he is pulled by our magnet rather than pushed like Tiffany was. Since he is pulled and the magnets of the stick and of the car may never touch Jaime also has popsicle sticks in between the magnets of the stick and of the car. We also made some minor adjustments to our stick. With Tiffany it had one magnet but with Jaime we use two. Though we love both the cars we made Jaime Phillip Alessandro Phillips Tisdale Graham was the one that has taken us thus far to victory. We don't know who will win for the grade but wish us luck! :)

Camera into Space :) :)

My group ( Maybry, E.O., Gabby, Zelle, and I) worked on making the parachute to attach to the container holding the camera for sending the camera into space. We made our pink parachute out of materials we ordered used specially for parachutes. We cut out a huge circle and put a small spill hole at the top. we also sewed on rings around the botton which we then put string through. We used the string to attach the parachute to the container. This is a video of one of the tests we did:

Space Cam :)

Today Maybry, Elizabeth, and I worked on another garbage bag parachute test. This time we made it shorter and fatter. We  used Ashley, Aalia, and Lauren’s container to see if both of the parts of the project worked. All of us went out to the bleachers by the field and tested it while it was videotaping the whole time :). The video worked really well and we could see very clearly on the video. The parachute worked much better than yesterday. The container was sturdy and didn’t mess the camera’s position up or damage it. We need to make the spill hole a bit smaller and we think after that it will be a good design. Maybry and EO will test it again tommorrow after their adjustments but I won't be there.

Bohr's model

This is supposed to look like Bohr's model of the atom. The 14 candles in the middle represent the nuclues and the candles around the outside are electrons that are orbiting in a circle.

Rutherford's model

I made this model out of christmas ornaments and candy canes ( They are different colored because they are sweettart flavored :). The big ornament in the center represents the nucleus of the atom while the smaller ornaments represent the electrons. The candy canes represent the orbit of the electrons.
